Gene More Than Doubles the Risk of Depression After Stress

An article in the July 18, 2003 edition of Science offers the hope that one day genetic testing will be able to reveal whether a person has a predisposition for depression. Scientists found that people with a particular variant of the serotonin-transporter gene were more than twice as likely to become depressed in response to stressful life events.
