Please Don't Stop Your Medication Without a Doctor's Assistance

Monday March 29, 2004
Since the advisory from the FDA regarding antidepressants and suicidal thoughts I've been hearing from members who are afraid to continue using their antidepressants. I would like to urge all members to please not "throw the baby out with the bathwater". While it is wise to exercise caution when you are starting a new antidepressant or making a change in your dose, this does not mean that all people will become suicidal. Only that patients should be monitored carefully by their physician when making changes. Please, only make changes in your medication, including stopping them, under your doctor's care and advice. If you suddenly quit your medication, you risk unpleasant discontinuation symptoms as well as returning depression or suicidal feelings.
