Forum: Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Tuesday May 4, 2004
I've read that omega-3 fatty acids may help with depression. Has anybody tried this? I bought a bottle, but I'm not sure exactly how much to take and what the therapeutic dose would be as far as depression is concerned. I've tried over 12 different antidepressants, all of which had horrific side effects and provided no relief, so I thought I would give this a try.

Yes!! I have low grade chronic depression and have been taking prescription meds for years. While I have had good luck with them, my chiropractor suggested the fish oil lately and it DEFINITELY works for me. As far as I can tell, the important part is the Omega 3s – specifically the EPA and DHA. You have to take a good amount of it – I’m taking 8 of the 1200mg “softgels” a day. (The stuff is not bad for you) So I guess I’m getting about 1600mg of EPA and about 1200mg of DHA per day. I would work up to that amount, I think. My experience is that it is working about as well as the best Rx drugs out there – and I’ve tried a LOT of the different antidepressants over the past 10 years. Give it a shot!
