Project Runway Winner Once Battled Depression, Attempted Suicide

Friday October 20, 2006
If you're a fan of the reality show Project Runway, you may have caught in the next to last episode that this season's winner, Jeffrey Sebelia, once battled depression and came very close to committing suicide. Luckily, his suicide attempt was interrupted by a roommate who was not supposed to be home yet. The Musicians' Assistance Program, a record industry organization founded to help addicted artists, paid for Sebelia, who was a musician at the time, to enter rehab and receive therapy. In a true rags to riches tale, he overcame depression and drug abuse, took a sewing class and later opened up his business, Cosa Nostra, designing clothes for rock musicians. Five years later, despite accusations from fellow contestant Laura Bennett of cheating, he became the winner of Project Runway.

I think there's a lesson for us all in Jeffrey's story. No matter how low you think you've fallen, you just don't know what the future holds.

The Los Angeles Times has published a really good piece about Jeffrey, his depression and more here:
