Cod Liver Oil Linked to Less Depression

Monday June 25, 2007

A study out of Norway reports that regular and long-term use of cod liver oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, may protect people from depression.

The study followed 21,835 patients between the ages of 40 to 49 and 70 to 74 and found that the prevalence of depression was 29 percent lower in those who consumed cod liver oil on a regular basis. They also found that the longer they had been taking cod liver oil, the lower the prevalence of depression symptoms.

The authors caution, however, that the study did have several limitations and said that randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm their results.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which the body cannot product for itself and must be obtained through diet. They are found mainly in fish, nuts and seeds. Fish oil contains Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA is thought to increase blood flow in the body and to have an effect on hormones and the immune system, both of which affect brain function. DHA is involved in the membrane of ion channels in the brain, making it easier for them to change shape and transmit electrical signals.

The study will be published in the August issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders.

It is encouraging to have this confirmation that such a simple expedient as a “balanced diet” including items rich in Omega 3 fatty acids seems to be so effective in reducing the likelihood of depression in people. I feel that the researchers should be complimented for finding this out and sharing their findings.

I came upon this article while searching for effects of Omega 3 fatty acids on depression. I also find it encouraging and started on the dietary suppliment today. I think there may be something to this!
