Teen Needs Advice

Tuesday August 19, 2008

This morning I noticed a post on the forum that really touched me: a new teenage member who really wants to get help, but her family just doesn't "get it". What would you advise her to do?

"I try to tell my friends and family that I think I need help and they all say, no you can't be depressed. I don't want to hide it anymore and I feel like I need help or someone to talk to. My parents are both alcoholics and I hate living at home. My mom seems to think she's helping me, but really I want to tell her that she's just as bad as my father is. I just lost a ton of weight and look great, but I don't feel good. Right now should be the best time of my life but I find myself not enjoying anything as much as I used to. I can't sleep at night, I only get about 2-3 hours. I try to get to sleep and then all the things I hate about life overwhelm me and force me back up. I have so much rage built up inside as well and I start throwing and breaking things. It's been like this for a while and its like I'm never going to get better and it's always going to be there. I just need someone to talk to since everyone seems to think I'm fine."...Post a Reply

(1) KJacket says:

Talk to your friends about anything EXCEPT what makes you depressed, joke around more, keep your mind off your troubles. An idea is to keep yourself too occupied to think about all the things you hate. Get a job, pick up a sport or two that you enjoy, to get really good at, aim for 100% in school subjects even if you don’t want to. When you start to feel angry and want to break things, do some exercise, situps, running or whatever and burn out that energy.
