Chantix-Suicide Link Questioned

Earlier this year, the FDA ordered a "black box" warning be added to the drugs Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban (bupropion), which are both used as aids in quitting smoking. The warning was the result of more than 5,000 reports of depression, hostility and other behavioral changes associated with these drugs and fears that these medications could increase the risk of suicide. A new report, however, suggests that Chantix may not actually increase the risk of depression or hurting oneself.

This finding derives from data collected from over 80,660 people in the UK who used various smoking cessation products between September 2006 and May 2008.

Of these people, 63,265 used nicotine replacement products, 10,973 used Chantix and 6,422 used Zyban.

When the researchers examined the study participants' medical records, they did not find any evidence of increased risk of serious mental health problems (self-harm, suicidal thoughts or depression) while these products were in use or within three months of the last prescription refill.

Study author Dr. David Gunnell of the University of Bristol, UK, did advise caution, however, in interpreting these results. Due to the size of study, it is not possible to completely rule out the possibility that Chantix may increase suicide risk. Dr. Gunnell recommends waiting for other studies to provide further evidence before making any conclusions.

The article was available in the online version of British Medical Journal as of October 1, 2009.
