Commentary: Do Babies Really Need Prozac?

I'm all for recognizing depression in youth and getting kids proper intervention, but what good could possibly come out of putting an infant on a high-powered psychotropic medication? Probably, but it's nothing that a safe environment where the child's needs are being met wouldn't fix. (The same goes for adults, come to think of it.) Medication is never a substitute for good parenting. Surely it would be better to look for a cause for a baby's distress rather than medicating the symptoms? Especially when we know so little about how this drug will affect the baby's developing body and mind. We know the deleterious side-effects these drugs have been reported to have on adults (loss of sex drive, blunted emotions, possible links to violence and suicide). What might it be doing to our children? We simply don't know.
