Question: What Do You Feel Is the Best Treatment for Depression? Meds or Therapy?
Answer: A combination of medication and therapy is the most effective, in my opinion. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is excellent. It helps you break the cycle of negative thinking that perpetuates depressed emotions. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is something I would recommend if you have experienced some trauma in your life. EMDR puts you in an altered state of consciousness where your brain is better able to come to terms with that past event. The medications puts your brain chemistry back in balance, but there are usually still issues to be dealt with. If nothing else, you have to break the habits of thinking like a depressed person. Depressed people are very negative in their outlook and you can talk yourself right into a depression very quickly if you have a habit of seeing the glass as half empty.
