Before You Buy Herbs and Supplements

Herbs and supplements are just as much medication as what you would be prescribed by a doctor, so you must know how to use them safely and effectively. They are not regulated like other medications and therefore you should purchase them only from manufacturers with proven integrity. Because there is a potential for drug interactions, please make your doctor and pharmacist aware of any herbs or supplements that you are taking.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is not appropriate for severe depression or bipolar disorder. Large doses may cause photosensitivity. The recommended dosage is 300 mg three times per day that has been standardized to 0.3% hypericin. Consult your pharmacist about potential drug interactions. Because herbals are not regulated like prescription medication, purchase from reputable manufacturers to insure potency.

Evening Primrose Oil

Research shows PMS may be due to a deficiency of gamma-linolenic acid, which can be supplemented by taking Evening Primrose Oil. Because it may take up to three months to replenish your body's supplies, don't give up if your symptoms are not relieved right away. Most sources seem to set levels around 3-4 grams daily to replenish body stores and then at 1-2 grams for continued maintenance.

5-HTP

5-HTP is an herb derivative that is converted by the brain to serotonin, a chemical associated with mood. Do not take doses greater than 100 mg daily or take it with other antidepressants. It can lead to a dangerous condition called "serotonin syndrome". There are several medical conditions and drugs (listed in the article "Is 5-HTP Safe to Use?") which preclude the use of 5-HTP. 5-HTP may be a sedative as well as an appetite suppressant.
