Question: Why Does My Med Not Totally Work?
Could you please discuss in why my medication for depression does not totally take it away? Shouldn't it, since usually it is a chemical imbalance? Sure there are emotional and environmental causes for depression, I understand that. But if those issues are being dealt with in therapy and you are supposedly on the "right" medication, then why does my med not totally work?
Answer: If you are not totally feeling well my first thought is that maybe you are not quite there with your perfect medication or combination of medications. Some people will get only partial relief until they augment with a second medication. There are at least three neurotransmitters that are thought to be involved in depression and the medications for depression affect these in different ways. There is no one medication that is perfect for every person because there is not just one biochemical factor that affects mood. One depressed person may have entirely different things going on at the biochemical level from another person. Some people will need to attack their chemical imbalances from more than one direction medication-wise to get full relief. I would suggest you discuss this with your doctor and see if he/she thinks it is wise to try augmenting your current medication with an additional medication. Let him/her know you are feeling better, but you are not quite there yet.
