Electroconvulsive Therapy

Definition: A form of treatment for depression which involves the application of a brief electrical pulse to the scalp in order to produce a seizure. Generally, a series of treatments are given over a period of weeks. Situations when electroconvulsive (also known as ECT) might be given are when medications have been ineffective or might endanger the patient, or when a rapid response is needed. It is also considered appropriate treatment for acute mania associated with bipolar disorder and certain schizophrenic presentations such as catatonia.
