Definition: A psychologist is an individual who has completed a doctoral level degree -- either a Psy.D. or a Ph.D. -- in the science of psychology. They may work in many different areas, such as research, teaching, administration or therapy. Those who specialize in therapy are called clinical psychologists. Generally, only persons who are licensed can call themselves psychologists, although most states have certain exemptions to this rule.
