Definition: Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by a feeling of restlessness and the need to be in constant motion. It is a potential side effect associated with the long-term use of certain drugs, such as neuroleptic (antipsychotic) agents, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, L-dopa, calcium channel blockers, and phenothiazine antiemetics, such as prochlorperazine or metoclopropamide.
