Definition:

Drugs which block the action of adrenaline. Beta blockers are commonly used to reduce stress on the heart and to lower blood pressure, due to the fact that they slow the heart beat, lower the force with which the heart contracts and reduce blood vessel contraction throughout the body.

In addition to their applications in treating heart conditions and high blood pressure, beta blockers have also been found useful in conditions such as glaucoma, migraine, anxiety disorders, tremors secondary to lithium and movement disorders caused by antipsychotic medications.

Also Known As: beta antagonists
