Guide Picks - Top 15 Guide Recommended Books
There are many excellent books out there about depression. These are a few that I've had the pleasure of reading. If you've submitted a book for me to review which doesn't appear here, this doesn't mean I didn't like it. I'm behind on my reading.
1) Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy
Learn to apply the concepts of Cognitive Therapy in your life with this self-help guide. Also recommended for those who already seeing a therapist, but want to understand more about the Cognitive Therapy process. Contains powerful coping strategies that anyone can use to beat negative thoughts.

2) The Bell Jar
This thinly veiled autobiography of Sylvia Plath's break down, suicide attempt and recovery was published just a scant month before she finally took her own life. Set in 1950's America, it reveals just how lacking treatment for depression and mental illness was at that time. This is book contains a gripping story that will make you glad to be living in a more enlightened era.

Bob Olson's case was one of those which seemed to not respond to treatment. His persistence and courage, however, paid off and he won the battle against his own illness. He offers a message of hope to others to others that they can do the same.

5) An Unquiet Mind
What I love about this book is that it shows that none of use are immune to mental illness, even a highly accomplished professional like the author. Her honesty about her illness and the battle to accept it are refreshing.

6) St. John's Wort: Nature's Blues Buster
After using St. John's Wort, I would never go back to Prozac. This book explains the benefits of using St. John's Wort. Highly recommended for those who want to take control of their own treatment using St. John's Wort.

7) Growing Up Sad: Childhood Depression and Its Treatment
Childhood depression is often overlooked because children don't know how to ask for help. Recommended reading for any parent who suspects their child may be depressed.

8) 5-HTP: Nature's Serotonin Solution
A physician's perspective on 5-HTP. His book thoroughly reviews the published literature on this nutrient, has interviews with experts, along with including a significant number of very interesting anecdotes from patients and personal experiences. It's a must read for anyone who is thinking about taking 5-HTP. The benefits of 5-HTP are discussed along with a thorough evaluation of its side effects and cautions.

Another highly recommended selection for parents.
