Definition: Bipolar disorder is an mood disorder in which the individual will alternate between periods of depression and periods of mania. During the manic periods, the person will experience a better than normal mood which may be mild (hypomania) or so extreme that it interferes with their life. The manic periods may last only hours or they may continue for weeks or months before the depression eventually returns.
