Definition: A mild degree of mania, often preceding a full manic episode.

Symptoms of hypomania include:

  • elevated mood
  • increased activity
  • decreased need for sleep
  • grandiosity
  • racing thoughts
Hypomania differs from mania in that it is not severe enough to significantly interfere with the person's day-to-day life. This may make hypomania difficult to diagnose because the patient feels happy and energetic without experiencing many negative effects, and thus doesn't recognize that there is a problem.
