From the article: Antidepressant Weight Gain
While the mechanisms that cause certain antidepressants to cause weight gain are not entirely worked out (metabolic effects and increased appetite have been implicated), it is clear that weight gain is one of the more frustrating antidepressant side effects people deal with. Have you been able to successfully avoid this problem? What are you doing to prevent weight gain from your antidepressant? Share Your Tips

shapeless!

I've been on AD for over four years now. I have gained over 3 stone and am the heaviest i have ever been! I have got to the stage when the way i am just feels like me! i don't feel much about my body although i know i'm fat! i think instead of living in my head all of the time now it's time to come back into my body. By this i mean i feel like it's exercise that will help me mentally and my final goal is to feel at peace with my mind first but hopfully with time my body to. I'm 42 now and i want to start living again and stop being in the endless rut that is wanting to appear almost invisible to others. Maybe my depression has caused my over weightness or maybe the medication!!?? which ever i'm ready to become visible again so working on the whole of me will i hope make me feel well again.

coffee lady

I have been a sz 2 or 4 all my life. Now that I am on seroquel & wellbutrin, almost a year, I have put on 12 1b. I am hungry ALL THE TIME. I find myself downstairs & in the kitchen at 2 am craving sweets...I never, never liked sweets...I was a salt lover. But I am scared to switch my anti depressants. Ironic that seroquel & wellbutrin do not cause weight gain with most people. I exercise every morning...still gained the pounds. Help!

Weight gain

There's not a lot you can do if when you're on an AD all it makes you want to do is eat carbs and whenever you can. I gained a stone in three weeks, because all I wanted to do was eat homemade muffins, spaghetti and rice dishes. It was an incredibly difficult thing to ignore. It's a purely involuntary and chemical thing that happens. Get off the offending AD as soon as you can and go onto something that doesn't do this. This was the third and last AD I took during an 18 month period. I didn't like what it was doing.

WEIGHT GAIN AND MEDS

I JOINED A TOPS CHAPTER EARLIER THIS YEAR. I LOST ABOUT 7 LBS A MONTH. I LOST A TOTAL OF 50 LBS BY OCT.11TH. THESE MEDICATIONS HAVE CAUSED ME TO GAIN WEIGHT AND I HAVE FOUGHT BACK. NOW I HAVE AN UBDERSTANDING WITH MY PSYCHE DOCTOR THAT I WILL NOT TAKE OBVIOUS WEIGHT GAIN MEDS. IF I HAVE TO DO SO IT IS TAKEN ONLY AT NIGHT FOR BEDTIME. THAT WAY I AM SLEEPING OFF THE MEDS RATHER THAN EATING ANYMORE THAT DAY. SO FAR THIS HAS BEEN A VERY PRODUCTIVE WAY FOR ME TO HANDLE MY BIPOLAR DEPRESSION.LORAYNE

No cure

except they need to come up with a new anti-depressent that does not have this side effect. I have been on most every one and all but Wellbutrin caused the weight gain but Wellbutrin caused severe anxiety for me so it is a no win. I just keep praying something will be developed as I have spine problems and cannot handle the weight gain on my spine. For years Dr.'s told patients it was not the drug causing weight gain but because they were happier and eating now. BS. Now over half of American is over weight and they want to charge more insurnace fees for the overweight. Go figure.

Prozac or Wellbutrin?

Hi ,I've been on Prozac for 4 weeks now and I'm not feeling good about my weight gain . At the same time I am already on Wellbetrin for about 9 months . Doctor told me it's for weight loss and i think it worked perfectly the first 6 months . But now i feel i want to eat more . Do antidepressants lose their effects after a certain time ?

I was over weight for by at least 40 lbs for over 10 years after starting my medication. The weight just made me feel worse about myself. I had always been thin. I finally went to a weight loss doctor and started with a trainer at the gym 3 times a week. I am now down to 9 lbs away from a clinical healthy weight. The exercise helps me sleep. I try to go 5 times a week now that the sessions are up with my trainer. I have more energy and feel much better about how I look.

weight gain and anti depressants

Sorry, there is not a thing you can do - it has nothing to do with what you are eating or your appetite - but just try telling a Doctor that one. I go to the gym, watch mt eating and walk 10,000 steps a day....still gaining weight.
